War ≠ Conflict. Join the Open Letter on the Proper Use of Terminology Regarding the War in Ukraine
The team of the Podilska Hromada Community Foundation from Vinnytsia is compelled to make a public appeal to international organizations regarding the inadmissibility of using the term “conflict” to describe the Russian-Ukrainian war.
During the Due Diligence process, the Podilska Hromada Community Foundation received an email from Start Network and the Disasters Emergency Committee informing them of a refusal to cooperate, citing the argument that we are an organization that “supports one side of the conflict” due to our fundraising efforts for a drone.
We sincerely appreciate the support that international partners provide to Ukraine and understand that not all international organizations can assist Ukrainian organizations due to various policies and humanitarian law regulations. However, we are outraged when this war is referred to as a “conflict” or when it is claimed that aid is being provided to “one of the sides of the conflict.”
It is crucial to recognize that this is not a conflict but a war for the survival of our country. The war is happening on our land, our cities are shelled daily, and people are dying. This is not only about Ukraine’s existence but also about the lives of each and every one of us, our families, and our loved ones.
When we hear the phrase “aid to the parties of the conflict,” we recognize Russian propaganda narratives. Unfortunately, it seems that some international organizations have succumbed to this propaganda, or there are those within their ranks who share such views. By calling this war a conflict, you normalize aggression and support the aggressor. We are fighting for our right to exist. And if you cannot support us, please say so outright. We do not need euphemisms or wording that devalues the tragedy Ukraine is enduring.
The Foundation calls on everyone who cares about the true meaning of the words “war” and “conflict” to join our open appeal to international humanitarian organizations. Together, we must insist on the proper use of terminology regarding the war in Ukraine.
It is time to acknowledge that we are fighting for ourselves, but we are also a shield between the world and the aggressor. Support this initiative that restores justice. Join the movement for change with us!
