We all witnessed the world rally around Ukraine in 2022. Volunteers abroad packed aid boxes, organized rallies, raised funds, and coordinated logistics late into the night. But today, we understand that it’s time to move from reactive aid to long-term, systemic partnerships. In this context, cooperation with the diaspora takes on new significance. It’s crucial to recognize that the diaspora is not just a source of donations or international advocacy. These are individuals — with diverse backgrounds and motivations — who have the potential not only to support, but to co-create solutions and help shape a new Ukraine.
But what does “diaspora” really mean? How does it operate? What motivates people abroad to engage? And how can Ukrainian civil society foster collaboration that is effective, equitable, and sustainable?
These are the questions addressed in the research study “Partnership Across Borders: How the Diaspora and NGOs Are Shaping New Models of Cooperation”, developed by the Charitable Organization National Network for the Development of Local Philanthropy in partnership with the analytics agency DataDriven.
This study:

Identifies major barriers to long-term involvement of the diaspora;

Highlights international cases of institutionalized diaspora support;
